Bernard Daniel Imhof, better known as Bernie by friends & family passed away at his home on November 28, 2013. Bernie was born in Yuma, CO on April 4, 1944 to Edwin John and Virginia Lea Lair Imhof. The family lived and farmed in the Lone Star area. Twelve years later, his only sibling Ginger Lea was born. He was raised in a Christian home and maintained his faith in the Lord throughout his life.
His elementary education was obtained at the Lone Star School, until 1959 when he and his family moved to Childress, Texas. Bernie chose to return to the Lone Star area to live with his Grandma Bertha Imhof and completed his sophomore year. The family moved to Casa Grande, Arizona in 1961, and convinced him to move with them. He graduated in 1963 from Casa Grande High School. He attended a vocational school in New York, NY for a short time before being drafted in the United States Army in 1965 during the Vietnam era. Although he was not deployed overseas, he proudly served his country for two years. Once returning to Colorado, he began breeding horses & livestock, which became a hobby that turned into a lifelong passion.
In December of 1968 Bernie joined the Yuma Police Department, not knowing that event would change his life forever. That is where he met the mother of his children, Carol Nadine Prather. They were joined in marriage on September 15, 1971. He continued his law enforcement service with the Yuma County Sheriff's Department until the young family returned to the Lone Star area. They relocated to the Merino area in 1974 to raise their family and have more room for his cattle and horses.
Bernie farmed, cared for his livestock and family while pursuing various agricultural activities in the Sterling area. He once again joined the law enforcement profession working for Logan County Sheriff's Department where he retired after 20 years of service.
On October 1, 1982 he lost the love of his life, Carol, to a tragic automobile accident. He continued to raise his children with the help of his father, Popo. He lived out his retirement in the Merino community enjoying his passion of breeding and racing horses as well as creating and selling ornate knife handles.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents Edwin and Virginia; his wife, Carol; and daughter, Brandi Jo. He is survived by his children Rebecca Redabaugh, of Berthoud, CO; Lee (Donna) Imhof of Merino, and Steven Imhof of Ft Worth TX; sister, Ginger (Leslie) Charvat of Ft Collins; granddaughters, Nicole and Shelbi Imhof; grandsons, Zakery (Rachel) and Logan Redabaugh; great granddaughters, Keely and Charli; and special friend Patricia Crowe of Sterling, CO.
