Bettie Sampson, 84 of Akron, died Monday, August 31, 2015 at the East Morgan County Hospital in Brush with her family by her side.
Bettie was born November 27, 1930 in DeNova, Colorado to Milfred and Violet (Baughman) Doane and was the second oldest of six children. As a child growing up she lived on a farm south of Akron. She loved the farm life of raising chickens, ducks, turkeys, and geese and milking cows. But her favorite thing to do was ride her house, Duke. As a teenager she worked for Ovid Shirley at the Anton Store and cleaning cabins there. She helped out neighbors by cleaning their houses. She attended many community dances where they would bring box lunches and she would spend all day decorating them and when it was auctioned off it would always bring the most money. All the boys loved dancing with her. She graduated 8th grade from Zender School and was the valedictorian of 5 county schools. She attended Lindon High School for 2 years and received her GED.
She married Melvin Sampson on October 7, 1951 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron. To this union, six children were born: Marilyn, Syvert, Selma, Karen, Martin, and Warren. She lived on the Sampson homestead 11 miles northeast of Akron for 62 years. She loved the farm life. Raising cattle, working the ground, harvesting, cooking and anything that needed done, she would do it. In her spare time she loved to write. Many of her stories were published in the Cappers Weekly and 3 are in the Halls of Congress in Washington DC. She loved crocheting, making many tablecloths, afghans, doilies, and pillowcases. One of her favorite things to do was look for arrowheads and rocks—she had a very large collection. Melvin and Bettie spent two winters in Arizona where she enjoyed collecting coins, playing cards, and going to casinos.
She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and an active member in Ladies Aid. Bettie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Melvin, son Syvert, sister Patty, and brother Marvin.
