Chuck Annand, 60 years of age died on April 16, 2011 of a heart attack while turkey hunting with his family. He was born June 3, 1950 in Hayden, Colorado to William Warren Annand and Margaret Ruth Wixson Annand. He attended Hayden schools until age 9 then his family moved to Golden where he graduated from Golden High School in 1968. He learned at an early age what family really meant. His father would make sure that they did everything as a family. They would all work together to get their chores and work done so they could play together later by going fishing, hunting, camping, or just spending quality family time. Chuck always cherished those times. On April 28, 1966 at the age of 15, Chuck lost his father to coronary heart disease at the age of 41.
Chuck attended and graduated from Colorado State University where he majored in Physical Science and minored in Chemistry. He also was a member of the CSU wrestling team where he had the experience of wrestling Olympic Gold Medallist Dan Gable. Chuck was #98 on Dan's 500 straight win list and Chuck never knew what kind of hold Dan put on him. One of his wrestling teammates, Jere Goodman, set up a blind date between Chuck and his sister, Deanna. Little did they know, this was the beginning of their life together. After only seeing each other 6 or 7 times, they married one year later on March 3, 1973 in Akron, Colorado. Chuck and Deanna worked in Wray, CO for Ceres Land and Cattle Company where they endured calving out 600 first calf heifers in a miserable eastern Colorado winter.
Chuck and Deanna moved to Big Timber, MT and worked on a registered Hereford ranch. Chuck loved the Montana life and they met life long friends. An opportunity arose to work for CSU Animal Research Center, and they moved back to Akron. On August 1, 1975, Chuck and Deanna had twin girls, Cia and Kelly. Three years later on July 25, 1978 their son, Todd, was born. Upon his return to Akron, he and his brother-in-law, Jere Goodman, started Horizon Herefords. This started his love for cattle ranching and he continued on with this his entire life.
In 1988, Chuck received his teaching credentials and started teaching at Akron High School where he also coached wrestling. He loved teaching the kids and helping them become young adults. He also worked part time as a dispatcher at the Washington County Sheriffs Office and ran livestock at home. He loved to keep busy, but always had time to help a friend or stranger if they needed it. He taught at Akron for 11 years and then made the change from teaching high school to teaching computer classes at the Sterling Correctional Facility for two years before going to teach at Northeastern Junior College in the Information Technology Department for the next 4 years. He decided to retire in 2006. Of course, being idle was not in Chuck's vocabulary. So he took up working for Horace Mann Insurance. He also worked at the Sterling Livestock Commission Co., where he always looked forward to working with the people there whether 10 degrees or 100 degrees and enjoyed seeing all the customers. He also could sneak in a piece of homemade pie once a week. He did love his pastries.
Hunting was a passion of Chuck's and he had an excitement about him when he knew he was heading out. He loved being a grandpa, father, and husband. He was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Deanna; daughter Cia and husband Trae of Fleming and children Kolton, Quincy, and Kanyon; daughter Kelly of Merino; and son Todd and wife Lori of Greeley and their daughter Hayden. He is also survived by his mother, Margaret, of Golden and two sisters, Ruth Weldon and husband Bart of Las Vegas, NV and Cathy Super of Denver. Chuck was loved and is survived by many nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
A memorial service will be held Friday, April 22, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the Akron High School Fieldhouse. Inurnment will follow at the Akron Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Chuck Annand Memorial Wrestling Fund. Brenner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
