CLIFFORD AUBERA STANDLEY, known as "Aubs", formerly of Otis, died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, June 20, 2011, at his home in Lakewood, CO. It was raining softly, and he loved the rain.
Aubs described his full life as follows:
The only son and second child of Walter Cleveland and Bertha Mae (Lynch) Standley, was born December 14, 1912 near either Worth or Gentry, Mo. His sisters were Velva (Rudnick), Geniveve (Church), Marjorie (Payne) Beulah (Maggard) and Marie (Rose).
At about five years of age the family moved South of Wilsonville, Nebraska. Clifford remembered having to walk to school through the pasture with the big long hill and all those rattlesnakes.
At seven years of age, around 1919, the family moved to Otis, CO for several months while Walter Standley fixed up the house on the farm ground he purchased South of Otis, near Cope. A brother-in-law, Walter Lynch, had also moved to Colo and bought land near the Standley's land.
At a young age Aubs helped in the fields and around the farm, harnessed horses and milked cows.
Aubs and sister Velva went to school in Otis and then transferred to Willadell. Then Walter Standley, Frank Allen, the Jones's, Kneise's, Christensen's and others helped form the Crystal Heights School district.
Aubs left school after finishing eighth grade to help at home with more of the farming. He got his first car then, a 1921 model "T" Ford roadster.
He used to go to all the neighbors barn dances. His dad, Walter, played the violin, mandolin and other instruments. His sister Marie used to play along at eleven years of age by cording with the music. Throughout his life, Aubs would sit and quietly play the mandolin while he leaned back in his chair.
At one of the dances he met Jannie Shockey. Her sister Anna Mae introduced them. Aubs said, "Those Shockey girls really fixed up for the dances." Jannie said Aubs was just a "ladies man". Aubs courted Jannie on a black and white horse and by car; a 1924 Model "T" Ford. It was black trimmed with red and had red wheels. He paid $175 for it and bought it at Yuma from Les Carter.
After seven months of courting, Aubs, at 21 years of age, and Jannie at 19 years of age, got married on June 5, 1933. Aub's father stood up with them at the Akron court house with Judge Verl Carpenter doing the honors.
At first the newlyweds lived with Aub's folks South of Otis, which later became known as the George Church place. Then Aubs and Jannie moved into a one-room shack. Aubs said they had an old cook stove and lots of Jannie's hard bread. He said she threw a loaf at him once and it knocked him out. He was also proud that they had 15 cars the first year they were married.
When Walter and Bertha moved to Platner, Aubs and Jannie moved into the "big" house.
Eight children was born to this marriage; Floyd in 1932, James in 1934, Wilma in 1937, Robert in 1939, Ronald in 1941, Nancy in 1944, Marilyn in 1946 and Dixie in 1947.
Aubs, Jannie and their family lived on the farm for sixteen years. Jannie said Aubs had a half section on the home place that he had planted to cane. He really wanted to invent a corn picker, so he worked and invented a corn picker…sold it, but lost the cane.
Aubs always worked on cars and constantly helped fix the neighbors machinery. During World War II he kept six or seven neighbors farming by making all the needed parts.
When Wilma was born in 1937, Mr. Harwood and two other men came and picked corn for $2.00 a day plus room and board. Aubs made a run to Canon city and got a load of apples. The hired help ate lots of apples and apple pie and at night everyone played music.
In 1949 Aubera helped put the sewer system into the town of Otis. He built the "Silver Spur" skating rink in 1947 while still doing his farm work. He wanted to put a swimming pool on the North side but Jannie said, "Absolutely not!" He also helped build the Conoco station and built and remodeled numerous houses in Otis, still traveling South to farm.
The family moved to Otis in 1949 so Floyd could go to high school.
Aubs went to Denver in 1955 to do construction work. He did this work for 27 years, and became one of the lead workers for Hutchinson Homes. He retired in 1982.
Jannie joined Aubs in Denver in 1956 where she worked at the Denver Dry Goods Co for 30 years.
Aubs and Jannie bought and remodeled a home in Lakewood, Co where they lived till they both passed away at home.
Aubs loved to garden, where he and Jannie had an ongoing contest to see who could grow the best tomatoes. He worked on cars, helped his children and grandkids with building or remodeling their homes; did cement work for them and whatever else they needed help with.
This man loved all his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He helped raise six grandchildren, helped and baby-sit with several great-grandchildren and the 2 great-great grandchildren. *
In 1983 Aubs and Jannie celebrated their 50th anniversary with a big barbeque, dance and celebration put on by all their children and their families at the Robert Standley farm East of Otis.
In 1993 Aubs and Jannie celebrated their 60th anniversary with a barbeque in Otis, at the fire hall, attended by family and friends.
His beloved Jannie passed away January 9, 2006 at their home in Lake wood. Every day, at some time for these past 5 years, Aubs has called out for "Jannie" to come.
Dixie, his youngest, has lived at the house and lovingly cared for her father for five years. Nancy has been there almost every day and periodically Wilma would come from Maine to "help Dad", and Marilyn would go up to Denver now and then to help Dixie. Other family members have stepped in from time to time to help. Aubs knew he was loved.
Also preceding him in death was his sons Floyd, James and Ronald.
