Donald Phillips Amick was born September 26, 1922. He went to Heaven to be with our Lord June 25, 2009.
Proceeding him in death was his father Marcus Amick; mother, Carrie Amick; wife, Ruby Amick; grandson, Larry Marshall, daughter-in-law, Sue Marshall; great-great-grandson, Angelo; great-great-granddaughter, Nevaeh Howe; and brother, Wally Amick.
His loved ones left behind are his son, Eddie Marshall of Potter Valley, California; three daughters, Patty Notz and husband Gary of Calhan, Colorado, Linda Jones of Northglenn, Colorado, and Karen Bucher and husband Danny of Thorton, Colorado; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
Donald went to school in Platner and graduated high school there. He loved playing baseball. After graduating, he joined the U.S. Navy. He was so proud to be an American, and of his love and ability to fight for his country, and his navy pals. The sinking of his ship, the U.S.S. Chicago, was the most memorable time of his life. After returning home, he went back to farming on the old home place. In 1947, he fell in love and married Ruby Van Matre Marshall.
He worked the oil rigs, but when he knew the moving around was to hard on the children, he settled down in Dupont, Colorado. He later worked for Petco and moved to Fountain, Colorado. Later he started his own trucking business in Grand Junction – Don's Old Trucks, (D.O.T.). He retired and moved back to Otis. In 2002, he moved to Calhan, Colorado to live with his daughter and son-in-law.
His love for his son-in-law, Gary, cannot be described. Gary was his best friend and hero. He loved him more than words can describe. They did everything together.
Donald loved watching every sport, especially baseball. He loved fishing, riding his stationary bike to town, walking down to the gate with Bear, seeing the country side, riding in the parades, throwing candy to the kids, going to the grandkids' games and programs, driving to town to have coffee at the V.F.W. with the guys, going to church and out to eat, especially waffles, pie, candy, and ice cream, and watching wheel of fortune (beat us all!). One of his best times was going on vacation to see his son, Eddie and his family. Going to Denver to visit both of his daughters, Karen and Linda and their families was always filled with laughter and love. Telling his stories and being with his family at family gatherings was one of his favorite things to be able to do. He loved and was so proud of his family. He loved life. His smile and laughter was contagious. He made everyone around him happy.
