Obituary

Harold Jergen Johnson was born on June 12, 1931 at home in Harrisburg, Colorado to Christ and Marie (Larsen) Johnson.  He passed away peacefully with family by his side on January 16, 2025 at North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, Colorado, at the age of 93.

Harold grew up on the family farm with his two sisters and four brothers. His parents immigrated from Denmark and  settled in Washington County to homestead.  He attended grade school at the Harrisburg School, and also attended vacation bible school and confirmation classes at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Brush, Colorado. After finishing school, he went to work for neighboring farmers.

He was then drafted into the Marine Corps in 1952 and served until 1954.  After returning home, he married Doris Aden in March 1954.  They were blessed with five children:  Larry, Deb, Janet, Chris, and Valorie, and 63 years of marriage.  They made their home in Akron, Colorado.

Harold worked for the co-op in Akron for a time delivering fuel throughout the area.  After that, he went to work at the USDA Research Station as a soil technician where he was employed for 28 years.

After retirement, Harold spent more time fixing things in his shop.  This hobby soon turned into a small engine repair business, where he was fixing lawn mowers, small engines, or whatever his customers brought him to work on.

Harold was a charter member of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Akron.  He and other dedicated members diligently worked together to establish a new congregation including construction of a new church building by the church members.

He was involved in his community in many ways over the years, including serving on the Boy Scout committee, the credit committee for the Akron Federal Credit Union, as well as various roles in the church.  He also served as a driver for the DAV to transport veterans to their appointments.

Harold's favorite pastime was going to auctions, or the next best thing, garage sales.  He enjoyed working in his shop, maintaining the church building and grounds, embracing his Danish heritage, and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his 5 children:  Larry & Anita Johnson, Deb & Harry Slusser, Janet & Keith Roark, Chris Johnson, and Valorie & Cy Kipp.  His is also survived by his brother Harry Johnson and his wife Jerry, and 2 sisters-in-law, Nioma Aden and Betty Hendrich, as well as many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and neighbors.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 24, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Akron.  Memorial donations may be made to Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church.
