Hazel Mary Purdy Wolfe was born on May 19, 1925, on her father's homestead 9 miles south and 4 miles west of Otis. She was the fourth child of Harry and Helen Hulburd Purdy. While growing up she attended the Bethany Presbyterian Church 2 miles from their home. She attended Welch School for 8 years riding horseback 3.5 miles each way. Hazel graduated from Otis High School in 1943. While attending high school, she and her brothers and sister would live with their Grandmother Hulburd in Otis arriving on Monday morning and returning home on Friday evenings. After high school, she attended business college for 1 year in Greeley living with her Aunt Mary Meeker.
Hazel married a neighbor, LeMoyne Wolfe, on May 29, 1944. The fall after they were married they went to the Indianola, Nebraska, area and shucked corn for LeMoyne's uncle. She spent every day along side of her husband in the field. At Christmas they came home and proceeded to Denver and worked at Gates Rubber Company. Hazel and LeMoyne moved into Otis in January 1947 where LeMoyne worked for Ray Dalton. Hazel waited tables for Sophie Ferguson and worked at a cream station, until Postmaster Max Rush asked her if she wanted to be his clerk at the Otis Post Office. At that time, the Postmaster could hire clerks. Max suggested that she take the Civil Service Exam so if something happened to him she would be assured of the job. That proved to be sound advice as Max passed away and she maintained her clerk position. At that time, the mail clerk worked 7 days a week. In the morning, Hazel would pick up the mail sack thrown from a passing mail passenger train, and sort and box the mail. In the late afternoon, she would put the outgoing mail in a sack, and put it on a special pole beside the railroad track to be snatched by a passing mail passenger train. On September 15, 1973, Hazel was appointed Officer-In-Charge, and Postmaster on April 27, 1974, where she served until 1981 when she retired after 34 years of service.
Hazel was an avid sports fan her whole life, whether watching or participating. In her younger years she played softball for Otis town teams, and later found what came to be her real athletic love and passion, bowling. She participated in 45 Colorado State Bowling Tournaments, attended 35 National Bowling Tournaments, and was a constant at bowling events all across Colorado doing whatever was needed. She also held many local and regional positions in bowling organizations until health problems curtailed her activities three years ago. She always maintained that the greatest satisfaction she received from all those years of bowling was the camaraderie with teammates as well as foes. Finally, Hazel and LeMoyne loved dancing, and were fixtures on dance floors all over the area from the time they dated until recently.
Hazel never made friends with everyone, but once you became her friend you were a friend for life. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Clarence, Edwin, and Dean; and sister, Bonnie. She is survived by her husband, LeMoyne; daughter, Gwen; son, Gary and wife Martha; granddaughters, Pam and husband Chris, and Margarette; grandson, Robert and wife Kara; great-granddaughters, Jess and Kati; great-grandson Robert II; and, a host of relatives and friends.
