Obituary

Jean Lucas, age 88, of Akron, Colorado passed away on Saturday, January 10th, 2026, peacefully at her home and surrounded by loved ones. Jean was born to Wayne Holmes Moots and Ermaline Almeta Hoover-Moots in Halstead Kansas on July 26th, 1937. As a young child, she moved with her family to Wichita where she attended Kindergarten through 3rd grade. In 1949, the family moved to Akron where Jean attended school from 4th grade on, graduating from Akron High School in 1955.

While in high school Jean and her sisters enjoyed roller-skating and participating in Jugs and Rainbow along with Cheerleading and Majorettes. It was during her time in high school that she met Vernie Lucas.

Shortly after high school, Jean and Vernie married on August 21, 1955. In 2025, the couple celebrated their 70th Anniversary. On November 22, 1956, Jean gave birth to their first child, a son, Scott Lee. Five years and three days later on November 25, 1961, she would give birth to their daughter Patty Jo. The family of four would continue to live in the general area, living in Anton for a time before settling in Akron for the long term.

During their younger years, Jean worked alongside Vernie as his secretary at the Akron and Anton grain elevators. She then worked for many decades at Citizen's National Bank, which is now Farmer's State Bank. She retired at the age of 76.

When not working, Jean's life was her family. She enjoyed being a mom to Scott and Patty, a grandma to her six grandchildren, and a great grandma to her 15 great grandchildren. When her grandchildren were young, she took great pride in parading them around the bank. She spent a considerable amount of time traveling around Colorado to support all these offspring in their many events and adventures.

Jean is survived by her husband Vernie of 70 years, her son Scott (Debbie) Lucas of Greeley, her daughter Patty (Dave) Denbo of Akron, her grandchildren Amanda (Justin) Flynn, Valerie (Aaron) Edinger, Veronica (Matt) Preston, Calvin Denbo, Daniel (Kayla) Denbo, Destiny (Samuel) DeCosta, her grandson-in-law Walt Baca, her great grandchildren Kaitlynn, Ellie, Everett, Cameron, Capri, Cortana, Dexton, Corbin, Jaylynn, Tyler, Vincent, Emily, Ava, Dirklyn, and Mason.  Including many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jean was preceded by her parents, her older sister Glenda, her twin sister Jane, her in-laws Clarence and Ellen Lucas, in-laws Harvey Lucas, Leora and Clifford White, Maxine and Leonard Ashcraft.

Funeral service will be held at the Church of Christ in Akron the morning of Friday, January 16th at 11 o'clock. Burial will follow at the Akron Cemetery with a meal to follow at Gemma's Crossing. Memorial donations may be made her memory to Bowin Funeral Home.
