Larry Keith McGinnis left this worldly plain on January 15, 2025, to be with his loving Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in heaven.
Larry was born to Eunice Smith and Samuel McGinnis on August 9, 1949, in Akron, Colorado. He spent his youth helping to run the McGinnis Family Homestead southeast of Laird Colorado with his father Sam and brother Howard. He attended elementary school and graduated eighth grade from Laird School. In school he was active in the choir and wrestling. He attended Wray High School for a year but ultimately decided that work was a better fit for him, and he continued working on the farm until 1969.
In 1969, he married Vickie Bingham and from this union were born: Deborah, Joanna, Rebekah, and Daniel.
On February 1, 1981, Larry married the love of his life, Naomi Kay Sherwood, and his family was completed with the addition of Jeremiah into his brood.
Larry was a jack of all trades, and master of none. He had many different jobs through the years. He cooked burgers at the old Farmer's Cafe in Wray. He operated heavy equipment for both Yuma and Washington counties. He worked at the mines in Georgetown, until he got trapped in one for a bit. He operated a mowing service in Akron for a while; and worked at Audubon Park making bird seed bells. Larry was a talented artist and loved drawing and woodworking.
Larry's true calling though, was animal husbandry. This passion came to fruition in 1987, when he and Naomi purchased a small property northeast of Akron and he started the Pig Farm. Larry loved building the farm and spent many cold nights ensuring that his sows were never alone during delivery and resuscitating lifeless piglets. The days and nights Larry spent working on the farm with his children were some of the happiest; and of course, most stressful days of his life. But he enjoyed teaching his children the value of hard work; and giving everything of yourself to whatever it is you are doing.
Larry's greatest joy was being Grandpa! He never faltered in being there for his grandchildren, no matter what. He loved making them laugh and was always trying to get them married off. You just never knew what he was going to say or do next. He was always quick with an amazing story, snappy comeback, or ornery jest.
His family will most remember the love that he so openly shared with them all. He never said goodbye without making sure that he told you he loved at least a dozen times; and giving you the biggest hug.
Larry was preceded in death by his mother Eunice; father Sam; brothers Howard, and Vern; daughter Deborah; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He is survived by his loving wife Naomi; daughter Joanna and spouse Matt; son Jeremiah and spouse Lois; daughter Rebekah and spouse Mike; son Daniel and spouse Marklynn. His grandchildren: Ariel, Kylie, Cheyenne, Joliene, Kieran, William, Ali Jo, Zackary, Hayden, Cole, Boen, Cody, Jessica, Kolby, Greg, Ashley. Great-grandchildren: Krista, Dalton, Gabriel, Emmanuel, Adaline, Andrea, Samantha, and Oliver.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, January 21, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the Foursquare Church of Akron. Memorial donations may be made to his wife Naomi McGinnis to help with expenses.
