Obituary

LeMoyne Wolfe, 91, passed away on April 30, 2016 at his home in Yuma, CO .LeMoyne Joseph Wolfe was born April 7, 1925, on the family homestead outside Indianola, Nebraska. He was the third child of Fred and Fern Junker Wolfe. After spending their early years in Nebraska, the family moved south of Otis, Colorado, in the early 1930s in the depth of the Great Depression. LeMoyne completed his formal education through the 8th grade at various country schools south of Otis.

In 1935, LeMoyne first saw a young neighbor girl by the name of Hazel Mary Purdy, when she, her parents, and her sister came to visit his family who had just relocated on the "Eland Place" close to the Purdy homestead. Hazel and LeMoyne were married on May 29, 1944, and were inseparable for over 68 years. From 1944-1946, the young married couple went to Nebraska to shuck corn, and later proceeded to Denver and worked at Gates Rubber Company. In January 1947 Hazel and LeMoyne moved into Otis where he began a 52 year relationship with Continental Oil Company in the bulk oil and gasoline business, first working for Ray Dalton, and later buying the business from Ray in 1964.

Other than always putting his entire family first and outside of work, LeMoyne had two great lifelong passions. One was aviation. He had vivid memories of watching an air show at Hyde, Colorado, in the early 1930s where they parachuted a cat out of an airplane. In 1969, he "earned his wings" flying solo, and, in 1970, obtained his private pilot's license. In subsequent years, he was seen many times flying around the country, finding a landing spot in a field or on a road, stopping for a cup of coffee mixed with good conversation, and giving many their first airplane ride.

The other was music. LeMoyne's musical interests also started at an early age self-teaching himself to play the harmonica "by ear" which he continued throughout his life. Later, with the assistance and tutoring of the musical Halcomb family of Otis, he expanded his talent by learning and playing the banjo. He put these musical talents "on the road" joining the well known local group, The Wiladel Rattlers. Two highlights of this relationship, were their entertaining at the Yuma, Colorado, Old Threshers from its inception and over 30 years straight, and being honored as the Grand Marshals for the 2011 Yuma County Fair Parade. LeMoyne also had many other interests that included guns, antiques, the study of history and acquiring local history, and was a long-time participant and contributor to the Yuma Old Threshers.

LeMoyne was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Hazel; sisters, Ruby and Dorothy; and brother, Lyle. He is survived by his sister, Pat; daughter, Gwen; son, Gary and wife Martha; granddaughters, Pam and husband Chris, and Margarette and husband Zach; grandson, Robert and wife Kara; great-granddaughters, Jessi and Kati; great-grandson Robert II; and, a host of relatives and friends. A funeral service was held Wednesday, May 4, 2016, at the First Presbyterian Church of Otis. Interment followed at the Otis Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice of the Plains or the Otis Cemetery.
