Obituary

Lovernne Anne (Young) Brown, age 99, went to sleep in Akron, CO, at the Washington County Nursing Home, and woke up in Heaven, on December 8, 2020.

Lovernne was born on November 23, 1921 to Edmond Birdsall and Lottie Opal (Payne) Young, the second twin to sister Lorainne Rose, at the family home at Arickaree, CO. She was the third of eight children.

When Lovernne was 14, she met a young 18-year old boy on the road, when her family was moving cattle to their new home. Then, in high school at High Prairie, their paths crossed again. His name was Peurlie Brown. When she turned 18 and was allowed to date, she went with Peurlie on their first date, to a movie. She said he was polite and nice, but they weren't serious.

After graduating from high school, Lovernne attended the Central Business School in Denver. She later remembered how lonesome and unhappy she was. Peurlie brought her home after she had finished school on Valentine's Day in 1942, and when they were almost to her home, he proposed. She said "yes", because as she put it, "I loved him".They were married on August 23, 1942. To this union, four children were born, three sons (Elton Leroy, Gary Ruel, Jerry Kent) and one daughter (Charlotte Ann).

Lovernne worked for six years as a nurse's aide, and also cooked and baked for the Silver Grill Cafe, Crestwood Cafe, and Norka Cafe. She baked from her own home, and was famous, at least in Washington County, for her cinnamon rolls and popcorn balls. She made and decorated birthday and anniversary cakes, and her wedding cakes were known to travel 100 miles or more for ceremonies.

Lovernne also used her baking skills to help the Foursquare women raise money in the basement of the old parsonage, located on the first block of West 5 th , behind the old church that sat on the corner of Adams and West 5 th . The ladies made doughnuts every week and sold them.

She wrote Christian children's stories and Christian readings, and is remembered fondly by children of several generations for those. For many years, the youth of the Foursquare Church would anxiously await the time during which Lovernne would share her newest story with them. She helped a number of young people develop their relationship with Christ through her writings. Not getting those stories published was one of her biggest regrets.

Lovernne was more than just a talented writer, baker, and cake decorator. She was a compassionate nurse's aide, and was never above taking a job that no one else would do, if it meant being able to help pay the bills. She was a loving and loyal wife and caregiver, and an awesome mother and friend. She made sure that her children were in Sunday School and church, every week.

Over the years, and right up until her final month, Lovernne entertained people across Northeastern Colorado by rattling beef rib bones. When Peurlie was a butcher, he would cut the rib bones for her, and Lovernne would match them to get the perfect sound. She tried to teach the skill to her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and anyone else who expressed interest, usually without success.

She also had a love for playing "marbles" and she passed that love down through the generations of her family. On family camping trips to Red Feather Lakes, it was common to see Lovernne and Peurlie both surrounded by their grandkids, playing countless games. Lovernne loved playing with the staff and fellow residents at the nursing home.

Recently, Lovernne celebrated her 99 th birthday at the Washington County Green Homes, with the staff and residents of her home. Her daughter, Charlotte, brought a cake and ice cream, as well as many cards from far and wide. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, she was unable to join in the celebration.

Lovernne was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Peurlie; her parents; one brother, Ralph; three sisters, Lorainne Perry, Fay Axsom, and Ila Miller; two sons, Elton and Gary; granddaughter Amy Brown; and grandson, Jeffrey Sherman.

Left to survive with many wonderful memories to pass down are two brothers, Birdsall Jr. and wife Darlene, and Vernon and wife Coral; and sister Evelyn Whisman. Also, daughter, Charlotte, and husband Terry Sherman, and son, Jerry, and wife Ann. Grandma Brown had 13 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren, as well as many others around the area who loved her and called her their Grandma Brown.

Funeral services for Lovernne are scheduled for Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at 11am at the Akron Foursquare Church, with graveside services following at the Akron Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Akron Foursquare Church, for either the youth group or In His Name House.
