Obituary

Margaret Joy (King) Vogel was born on March 25, 1929 in Tooele, Utah, the third of three children born to Jean Isabella and William Johnson King. Early in her life, she and her family moved to Steamboat Springs, where she learned to love the beauty of life in the outdoors in a sleepy, mountain town. She found life to be an adventure in that setting. In her childhood she attended Sunday School at the local Methodist church, and there she heard the gospel and received Jesus as her Saviour. She attended school in Steamboat Springs, graduating from the local high school in 1947.

While finishing her high school education, she took a job as a desk clerk at the Hotel Harbor in Steamboat Springs. Among the guests she served was a young man from Denver, who had just been discharged from the U.S. Army Air Corp, and was working for the Bell Telephone Company as a lineman, constructing the toll lines between Denver and the northwest corner of the state. She caught his eye, one thing led to another, and she and Bob Vogel were married on June 8, 1947. They began their life together in Denver, and later lived in Brush, Akron, and Sterling. Upon Bob's retirement from the telephone company, they returned to Akron in the early 1980s.

The mother of three children, Joy devoted herself to homemaking. In her "homebuilder" years, she invested her time and energy in her family, raising her children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. At each of her homes she planted a vegetable garden and raised flowers to beautify the yard; the iris was her favorite.

Informed by her Christian faith, Joy understood the value and dignity of human life from conception to natural death. She was particularly burdened for children, and sought to serve them in a variety of ways. On occasion, she served as a volunteer teacher's helper in the public schools. She was active in the work of Good News Clubs, which she hosted and taught, and in the Sunday School program in her local church, the First Baptist Church of Akron.

With compassion for the aged, Joy served as a volunteer in a variety of ways at local nursing homes, first in Sterling, then in Brush, and finally in Akron, logging thousands of hours over 40 plus years of service. She understood that though age had robbed some of their vitality, they deserved to be treated with dignity, and she sought to bring a bit of cheer into their lives in the name of Jesus, whether by playing bingo with them, serving coffee and donuts, reading and visiting, or taking them for a "drive" in their wheelchairs. One of Joy's hobbies was embroidery. It would be a regular thing to see her in her chair in an afternoon or evening with an embroidery hoop, stitching color onto cloth while conversing or listening to the television. Indeed, among her accomplishments, she embroidered a quilt for each of her children and grandchildren.

She was aptly named "Joy," because she loved to laugh. She liked chocolate; apparently, she thought it was one of the four food groups.

She also enjoyed doing family history research. She and Bob traveled extensively in their retirement years, visiting libraries, cemeteries, and historic sites with family significance.

Joy passed from this life into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus, on January 21, 2021, at the age of 91 years, 9 months, and 27 days. She is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Bob Vogel; her daughter, Jennifer Jones; and her sister, Mary Jean Perry. She is survived by her brother, Bill King; her son, Bob Vogel (Kathy) of Yacolt, WA; her daughter, Susan White (Stan) of Thornton; eight grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Akron.  Interment will follow at the Akron Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church for the Bible Camp Fund.
