Obituary

Mary "DeLew" Espinoza, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2024, in Greeley, Colorado. Born on May 1, 1953, in Matthews, Virginia, Mary lived a life full of love, strength, and resilience. She was 71 years old.

Mary was the cherished daughter of Rosemary Taper and Herman Lewis Taper, both of whom preceded her in death. She is survived by her loving son Roger Espinoza, of Brush, Colorado, and daughter Shilo Espinoza of Des Moines, Iowa; Richard Solum of Oregon; and Gary Solum Jr. of Oregon. Her legacy continues through her adoring grandchildren: Jordan Davis of Daytona Beach, Florida; Alex Espinoza-Strohmeyer of Sterling, Colorado; Isis Gray and Dynasty Gray of Waterloo, Iowa; and Kayleigh Espinoza of Brush, Colorado.

Mary's educational journey began at Akron Elementary and Junior High School. She relocated to Oregon in the 7th grade, where she later graduated from Knappa High School in Astoria, Oregon, in 1971. Mary was known for her dedication and hard work in all her endeavors. Her career included a notable tenure at Hall Grain in Akron, Colorado, until 1998. She then began an illustrious career with the Washington County Sheriff's Office, initially as a dispatcher. As the Justice Center was built, Mary transitioned into the role of a correctional officer at the jail. Through her dedication and exemplary service, she rose to the rank of sergeant correctional officer. Her career was cut short in 2009 due to a stroke, which led to her permanent disability.

Mary was not only respected for her professional accomplishments but also for the beautiful person she was. She had an innate ability to get along with everyone she met, earning the respect and admiration of her coworkers and even the prisoners she oversaw. Mary was incredibly kind, sweet, and always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. She was fiercely independent, often attempting to manage everything on her own, rarely asking for help. This strong and courageous spirit was one of the many qualities that endeared her to all who knew her.

Her strength and determination were evident throughout her life, and she faced every challenge head-on with grace and dignity. Mary never let her personal life interfere with her professional responsibilities, a testament to her unwavering commitment and integrity.

A funeral service to honor and celebrate Mary's life will be held on July 15, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the Akron Cemetery in Akron, Colorado. Arrangements have been entrusted to Bowin Funeral Home, and Mary's family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of support and love during this difficult time.

Mary "DeLew" Espinoza's life was a testament to kindness, resilience, and unwavering love. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. As we say our final goodbyes, we hold onto the memories and the incredible legacy she leaves behind. May she rest in eternal peace.
