Obituary

Mary Ann Kundert-Saffer

March 10, 1927 – May 14, 2026

Mary Ann Salley was born on March 10, 1927 in Colton, California to William H and Birdie May (Cox) Salley. She was the third of seven children.  The family soon returned to Washington County, Colorado where she spent the remainder of her life except for one year working in Denver during World War II.

She grew up on the family farm north of Platner, attending Center country school through the eighth grade.  Wanting more business training than offered by Platner High School, she attended Akron High School.  Since there were no school buses, she lived with her aunt Osa Jansen in Akron during the school year.  After graduating from high school at age 17, she joined her friend Audrey Highland in Denver and began working as a stenographer for Hawkeye Casualty Company.

While working in Denver she met Staff Sargent Lewis H Kundert of Otis who was stationed at Lowry Field with the Army Air Corps while awaiting discharge from the service after a tour of duty in north Africa.  Mary Ann and Lewis were married on July 7, 1945 in Denver.  After Lewis's discharge from the Army Air Corp in September, they moved to the USDA Central Great Plains Field Station east of Akron where Lewis was employed.  Two sons, Pat and Tom, were born while they lived at the station.  Mary Ann obtained employment as a bookkeeper at the Gambles store in Akron, and then at the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) office.  The family moved to Akron in 1955. In 1962 she became employee number two of Goodman Realty, Bob Goodman being employee number one, and soon obtained her Broker's license. She was a mainstay in the business until 2017 when a stroke forced her retirement at age ninety.  She was an anchor of Main Street for fifty-five years.

Mary Ann was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Akron.  She taught Sunday School for many years, and was active in church leadership.  She was a member of the local chapter of Alpha Nu Sorority for more than 60 years.

Mary Ann was a kind and caring person and was genuinely interested in the community.  She faithfully kept up with local youth and what was happening in school activities. She led a life filled with hard work, generosity, and goodness.

She and Lewis were married for 56 years before his death in 2001. She found loving companionship again and she and Avon Saffer were married in 2003 and enjoyed their life together until his passing in 2007.  She was preceded in death by her parents Bill and Birdie, her brothers Paul and Glen, her sisters Phyllis and Sandra, and her granddaughter Sally Marie.

Mary Ann is survived by her sons Pat (Judy) Kundert of Broomfield and Tom (Linda) Kundert of Lakewood. Her sister Barbara Wilson of Medford, Oregon and her brother Bill Salley of Littleton, Colorado also survive her.  She will be missed by her four grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter, and many nieces and nephews.

The family sincerely thanks the many members of the Akron community for their kind and generous support and help in her later years.  She was blessed by her many friends. Donations in her memory may be made to the American Heart Association or The American Macular Degeneration Foundation.

Funeral services will be held at the Akron United Methodist Church on May 27, 2026 at 11 am.  Interment to follow at the Akron Cemetery.
