Obituary

Maryln Alice Elrick, of Akron, Colorado, was born August 21, 1936, the fifth child of James Chesley and Elmo Droz Trahern.  She was called home by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at the age of 87 years.

As a young girl, Maryln's family lived south of Flagler, where her father and mother owned a farm and made a living farming and selling cream and eggs.  Maryln and Bill Elrick eloped on Friday, June 13, 1953, and were married in Las Vegas, New Mexico.  As very young newlyweds they made their home north of Flagler where they farmed wheat and milked cows.  They started raising their family with Judy born in 1954, and Lila, Bill Jr., and Bob joining within the next five years!  She always told the kids that she wouldn't trade them for a million dollars, but wouldn't give a nickel for another one! Life was a challenge when the kids were young.  The family moved several times, and eventually ended up north of Arriba.  It was 30 miles to the grocery store, to the doctor, to school, or to anywhere!  That prompted the family move to Akron, Colorado, in August, 1968.  Life was busy with work and family, and in Maryln's own words, "we enjoyed the sports, the school board meetings, the FFA, the FHA, Rainbow Girls, Pep Club, church Sunday School, Youth Group, fishing trips, fair time; you name it and somebody was in it!"

Bill and Maryln always wanted to move back to the farm, and they got the opportunity in 1978 when they purchased 80 acres in Platner, Colorado.  They made their new home a show place with a beautiful yard, a pole barn and corrals, and eventually a big building for Bill's toys!  With the addition of daughters and sons-in law, and eleven grandchildren, their home was a frequent destination for family from near and far.

In addition to being a wife and mother, Maryln worked at many different jobs in her life.  When they first moved to Akron, she worked part time at the post office, she formed the Elrick Janitorial Service and with the help of her children, cleaned offices around town.  She eventually ended up at the Washington County Assessor's Office, and later the Washington County Treasurer's Office.  She served as the Washington County Treasurer from 1993 until her retirement in 2001.  The County funds were always safe and balanced under her watch!

When Bill's health began to fail, he wanted to get Maryln into town.  Bob drew up plans, they found the perfect location on the edge of town with a large yard and a big building, and after five months of hard work, Maryln was able to move in February, 2009.  She treasured her yard and kept it in immaculate condition for the rest of her life.  You would often see her on her John Deere riding mower, pulling weeds in the flower beds, or feeding and watering her chickens.  Her happy place was in her yard.

The most important thing in Maryln's life was her husband and her family.  She loved and cared for each and everyone of her four children and spouses, eleven grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, and counting!  She is proceeded in death by her parents, her four brothers, her beloved husband, Bill, son-in-law, Kim Kessinger, and grandson Kasey Kessinger.   She is survived by her daughter, Judy Brown (Wayne), of Gunnison, Colorado, daughter, Lila Kessinger, of Sterling, Colorado, son Bill Elrick Jr, (Cathy) of Somerset, Kentucky, and son Bob Elrick (Deb), of Fort Morgan, Colorado, her sister Pat (Tom) Jensen of Flagler, Colorado, sister-in-law, June Trahern, of Sterling, Colorado, and brother-in-law, Don (Janice) Elrick, of Watkins, Colorado, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

A celebration of Maryln's life will be held on Monday, August 5, 2024, at 10:00 AM at the Akron United Methodist Church, Akron, Colorado.  Because of her many years of service and devotion to the Akron United Methodist Church, memorial contributions can be made to the church or to the Akron Senior Center.
