Anton

Obituary

Norman Glen Schrock entered this world on June 26, 1954 in Brush,
Colorado.  He was the only child of Ervin and Myrna (Sharpe).  He died
peacefully at his home south of Anton, Colorado, after a four year
battle with stage four pancreatic cancer on March 2, 2018.

Norman attended the Arickaree School and graduated with the Class of
1972.  He attended Northeastern Junior College and later returned to the
Anton area where he worked for the Anton Coop and Washington County Road
Crew, all while helping his Dad with farming and ranching, during his
off hours.  In March of 1978, Norman started his 38 year career working
as a lineman in the Anton area, for the Y-W Electric Association, (even
after declaring, a few years prior, that he would never do a job that
required climbing a pole). Reality was, becoming a lineman and
maintaining the Anton area lines was a job that he took great pride in
and was completely dedicated to. It was who he was and he enjoyed being
able to serve the people in his community and "keep their lights on."

On February 23, 1974, he married Cathay Niebur, at St. Joseph's Catholic
Church in Akron, Colorado.  With this marriage, Norman gained five
siblings that he totally enjoyed and claimed not as his in-laws but as
his brothers and sisters.  He and Cathay were blessed with three
children, Bradley, Angela, and Collin that kept their lives full of many
new challenges all of which Norm totally treasured.

In his spare time, he very much enjoyed his hobby with guns (and anyone
he could talk to about guns or would listen to him talk about guns),
helping his boys with the farm and ranch, and spending as much time as
he could with all of his family members and especially his eight
grandkids.  Norman had a motto that he lived by and shared with many.
"Just remember…Everyday is a good day, some are just better than
others!"

He is preceded in death by his father, Ervin. He is survived by his
mother, Myrna; his wife, Cathay; his son Brad and wife Deanna and
children Tate, Cora, Raeya, Kane, and Jaida of Anton, Co; his daughter
Angela and husband BJ Mayhan and children Brett, Lindsey, and Levi of
Kit Carson, Co; and son Collin of Anton, Co.; many sister and brother
in-laws, numerous nieces and nephews, family and friends.

Rosary was held Thursday, March 8, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the Saint Joseph Catholic Church.  Mass of Christian Burial followed at 1:30 p.m.  Interment followed the Mass at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made to the Hope Kids Colorado Chapter PO Box 7073  Denver, CO  80207.

"What Cancer Cannot Do….Cancer is So Limited…."

"It cannot cripple love, it cannot shatter hope"…. on February 14, 2014, Norman discovered he had stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer….what a shock to realize you had only a few more months to live.  In order to have more time with his 3 kids and 8 grandkids, he chose to endure one of the harshest forms of chemo to hopefully have 12 more months.  It was an act of love and hope for his family that enabled him to endure 54 rounds of chemo and 10 rounds of radiations over the next 48 months.

"It cannot destroy peace"….. From the moment he discovered the diagnosis of "cancer", Norm was at peace with it.  It was amazing to witness his calm and serene nature while the rest of us tried to keep tears in check. "God was in control."

"It cannot destroy friendships"…. He loved keeping in touch with family and friends, when he had the strength.  His amazing family at Y-W remembered him constantly. What a gift they were to him by being his cheerleaders!  They have no idea how special they were to him and what a major part they played in his healing and daily survival, as well as the countless others with their cards and prayers.

"It cannot suppress memories"… Grandpa Norm worked hard to build more memories with his grandkids every chance he had.  They cheered him up on some of his toughest days and always made him smile.  As with everyone he already knew, and with every nurse, doctor, and stranger he met during these last years, guns were always at the top of the list.  "Are you a 'gun nut?'" or "Do you have new guns?" were his common questions. It was not always well received in the liberal city of Ft. Collins.  Many will always remember this about Norm.

"It cannot silence courage"…. And courage was what it took to go back for each chemo and to wear the hats and costumes into the clinic that he did.  For someone who used to be a little quieter, he did not hesitate to wear what the
Y-W ladies so graciously sent him.  " It cannot suppress humor"… He totally looked forward to the reactions he would get when the clinic staff and patients would see him. "You have to have something to laugh about!" would be his response to the stares and then they would LAUGH and agree.  It helped him prepare for the three days of chemo he had ahead of him.

"It cannot invade the soul"……"it cannot steal eternal life"…. Throughout his journey with cancer; Norman always kept an attitude of "thankfulness".  He was grateful for all God had given him, for all those who prayed for him, and felt he had been very blessed with a wonderful life.  He never wasted a moment being upset or questioning why...but knew God had a plan and all he had to do was "trust" in Him. Norman knew what was beyond the cancer….and, in the end, cancer would not win.

"It cannot conquer the spirit"….. Each time Norman approached chemo, he would tell me, "I can handle this but it tears me up to think about the little kids having to go thru this."  His request was to not have a lot of flowers at his funeral and to have memorials go to helping kids with cancer.  Even during a difficult chemo, his fighting spirit would strike up another conversation with a stranger and you would hear him say, "Just remember...every day is a good day, some are just better than others."
