Russell Alan Miller, 68, passed away suddenly at his home early Friday morning November 15, 2024.
Russell was born on June 22, 1956 in Kansas City, Missouri to Clive and Joyce Miller. Russell "Rusty", known to his family and close friends, was 4 years old when his family moved back to Colorado. They lived in Ft. Morgan where he started school. In 1966 they moved to Akron where he graduated from high school.
When he was 18 he joined the US Navy, where he traveled the world for 4 years, until he was honorably discharged. Finding it hard to find work after he returned home he re-enlisted in the Navy for another 4 years. He was very patriotic and proud of his time spent in the Navy. After he was discharged from his second tour, he settled in Mississippi for several years before he returned to Akron in 1999. He worked different jobs throughout the years until he started managing the apartments where he lived for the rest of his life.
Although he had no children of his own he always loved kids and babysat his Brother Pat's small children. He would watch them after school and during the summers where they enjoyed watching movies, playing board games and spending time together. He formed a special bond with his niece and nephew, Joyce and Jake Miller. After the kids were grown they enjoyed going to watch the Rockies games and spending time with him. They both have very fond memories of their uncle from the time they spent with him.
He bought a camera later in life and took up photography as a hobby. He took many beautiful pictures over the years and he loved to photograph nieces and nephews, nature and structures in and around the Akron area and beyond. He always had the camera with him wherever he went. He had entered his photos to the Akron Fair where he won first a couple of times. He was happy to share his love for photography and would show the pictures he was taking with enthusiasm.
He enjoyed gardening, took pride in his yardwork and planted flowers in and around the apartment building where he lived and worked.
In the last couple of years of his life he was enjoying fishing with his niece Joyce and yes, even took a picture of her while she was catching a fish.
He is preceded in death by his father Clive Miller, his brother Patrick Miller and maternal grandparents Bernice and Elmer Doane.
He is survived by his mother Joyce Miller, his brothers Rick (Lisa), Mike (Misty), his sisters Teresa Latimer (Bob), Dawn Johnson (Tim), Shannon Queen (Doug), and Erin Johnson (Todd). He is also survived by many Aunts, Uncles, Nephews and Nieces and a host of friends. He will be missed by his family and his close friends, Debby Kogl, Cory Minton, Loye Files and Robert McMillion.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, November 21, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. at the Akron Cemetery Gazebo. Memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
