Vic was born on April 1, 1955 on the Vondy Family Farm 15 miles north of Brush, CO in the Snyder/Antelope Springs Area. He had fond memories of growing up and working on the family farm with all his siblings and neighbors. He attended grade school in Snyder, CO and when the local school districts of Snyder, Hillrose & Brush consolidated he was a member of one of largest high school classes at Brush High School in 1973.
In high school and early twenties, many people knew him for his long-haired wild man with the sweet muscle cars from the 60's and 70's. His favorite muscle cars that he owned included Chevelle's and Mustangs. He continued his passion for muscle cars with his kids and grandkids. He and his siblings were known for throwing some of the best parties around. His brother Dave noted their parties were usually bigger than the crowd at Nick's in Snyder. Their legacy of good times comes up in every social gathering as they cross paths with old classmates and reminiscence. The Class of 1972 Senior Kegger was hosted by the Vondy siblings and included a live band and lots of entertainment for over 250 people. Kind of like a mini Woodstock in NE Colorado as people traveled from miles around.
The Rebel Vic caught the eye of Kim Segelke and on November 6, 1976 and after dating for several years they were married in Hillrose, CO. Shortly after that, they moved to the family farm north of Snyder and started their family. On February 26, 1978 David D. Vondy was born. A few years later Meredith L. Vondy was born to complete the family. Over the years many friends and family would also join the family from time to time for summer vacation and other holidays. Vic worked tirelessly to provide for his family and expand the farm and ranch operation over the years. Some of his fondest memories included raising a host of animals (Pigs, Cows, Sheep & Horses), preparing 4-H animals for the Morgan County Fair and watching his kids both go through and compete for multiple state championships with the Brush Beetdiggers. Later he would become a huge Western Colorado Mountaineer Wrestling Fan. There his son Dave Vondy, under his constant support and coaching would go on to win the 2001 NCAA D2 National Championships in Greeley, CO. This along with the Hall of Fame induction was one of his highlights in life.
Other high points in his life was the marriages of his children, Dave, to Brenda Neb at the Sylvan Dale Guest Ranch in Loveland, CO and Meredith to Adam Potgieter there at their Vondy's Horse Boarding in Sterling, CO. Later years, produce 4 grand children that were the center of his life. In 2006 his first grandchild Faith Vondy arrived, then Brody in 2008, Brock in 2010 and Quinly in 2012. He loved every minute with his grandkids and developed special bonds with each of them. Grandpa Vic spent extensive time taking and coaching Faith in wrestling, softball, football and raising farm animals. He and Brody enjoyed spending time working on and restoring the 1967 Mustang Fastback, learning how to drive, antique hunting and hog hunting in Texas. He and Brock enjoyed worked on woodworking projects, driving the Mustang Car and arrowhead hunting. He and Quinly enjoyed horse riding lessons, wrestling and softball. He worked with all the kids and different fundraising auctions across CO, NE & WY teaching them customer service, work ethic and the importance of customer satisfaction.
While working hard to grow and expand the family farm and ranch, he really enjoyed having his siblings, nieces, nephews, family and friends come for farm tours. He could find a project for about every age of kid to contribute to the chore routine. Cousins would travel from miles around to get in line to do chores and help on the farm. Vic took great pride in seeing his family and friends appreciate the farm and ranch lifestyle.
Over the years Vic started a variety of businesses including Vic Vondy's Custom Baling & Vondy's Horse Boarding. He prided himself on customer service and satisfaction of serving clients across NE Colorado and beyond. Vondy's Horse Boarding was one of his pride and joys. At times, he boarded as many as 30 horses at their new farm in Sterling, Colorado. One Northeastern Junior College Student even had her horse shipped from Boston, Massachusetts so Vic could take care of it while she was in college. Over the years his clients became more like Family, and they developed lifelong relationships.
Over the years, Vic's love for farming and ranching parlayed perfectly into a Field Service position with the Farm Service Agency (FSA) in Morgan and Logan County. He was a strong advocate for innovation and conservation. He went out of his way to educate farmers and ranchers on the programs and resources available to maximize their operations. Vic provided great service for farmers and ranchers and appreciated his collaboration, communication, friendship as well for the love of the land. Upon retirement from the FSA he helped on a variety of Farms and Ranches including the Dulaney's, Meisner's and others.
Vic spent most of his life living in NE Colorado between Snyder, Brush, Sterling, Akron and Morgan as well as some time in Fruita, CO. Along the way he made friends with people all over the state and region. From the hardware store to the Ag Stores, farms and ranches he always found someone to talk about ag, sports, kids, grandkids, family and friends. He always gravitated to farm and ranching and working in the different shops he had over the years on a host of projects. He was a very talented handy-man he could fix almost anything that crossed his path, a trait he learned from his father and siblings whom he dearly loved.
He always loved the Chimney Canyon area around the Pawnee National Grassland in NE Colorado. He looked forward to the Chimney Canyon Grazing Association Annual Barn Dance each fall and raved about the yearly event. He spent many days driving around and admiring the area and lifestyle. Month's prior to his death from COVID-19 on November 22, 2021, he expressed to his sister Gloria that he would like to be buried in a cemetery near the "Wide Open Spaces" close to Chimney Canyons. Thus, Gloria and the family worked to make one of his last wishes a reality.
Vic loved his family, friends, farming, ranching, animals, calving season, branding season, harvest and spending time with his grand kids. He enjoyed sporting events with his kids, grandkids, family and friends. He spent over 40 years arrowhead hunting a hobby he picked up from his buddy Albert Kaufman. Anyone who spent any time in his home likely saw his wall of fame and extensive arrowhead collection. In his shop, he also had an extensive collection of hammers and other tools he started at a young age that included many pieces from his father and others he admired. He always had a pristine shop and took great pride in making his properties and shops look good.
Over the years he spent some time traveling with his family to family and sporting events. In later years he went with Meredith and Adam up from CO to the Northwestern US. He went on a Texas Hog hunt with Faith & Brody as well as a spring break trip to Galveston, TX. Other day trips included Estes Park, Chimney Canyons and arrowhead hunting trips with family and friends across Colorado. His latest vacation was to Terry, Montana this summer to see the Devlin's and tour their ranch, look for arrowheads and visit. Though he did some traveling, his love for Northeast Colorado always was drawing him back as he had a friend or family member to help back home.
He invested many hours and days investing in future generations. He had a special skill for motivating and working with young people and his ultimate positive and push for them to reach for their goals. He invested time trying to make sure he left things better than he found them. Over the years he made many friends and encouraged others to reach higher and look to accomplish more. He made an impact on many people and went out of his way to lend a helping hand. He was a Christian man who always strived to do his best. May he rest in peace in the "Wide Open Spaces" of Colorado & Heaven!
